TRACY GRAMMER’s career began in the late 1990s as half of folk
duo Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. Following Carter's death in 2002,
Grammer continued to tour, building a formidable following as an
interpreter, instrumentalist, storyteller, and champion of Carter’s legacy.
LOW TIDE, Grammer's eleventh album, is her highly-anticipated
songwriting debut, and represents a sea change for the artist.

“I decided I would not play to a genre, nor would I play to any version of
myself that had come before,” says Grammer. “In contrast to my legacy
work, I had no one to serve but the songs themselves, and no hat to wear
but my own, as the artist. This was liberating ... but surprisingly
challenging, too.”

Co-produced with longtime accompanist Jim Henry, LOW TIDE features
grittier guitars, impassioned vocals, layered string and harmony
arrangements, and a punchy rhythm section, giving this album a bigger
sonic stage than Grammer’s previous works. “My entire musical
foundation — classical, country, pop, and folk — informs this recording. I
feel like I found my voice — many of them, actually — and delivered the
truth.”

The album opens with “Hole,” a kick-driven confessional tracing the
singer’s failures in love. “Forty-niner” is a cinematic look at gambling life
through the lens of casino security, while “Good Life,” Grammer’s most
requested song in concert, is a poignant, country-inflected review of her
father’s mistakes and revelations, told from his perspective. “The Mark,”
an Americana rocker, is the biblical Cain’s blistering statement of purpose,
and the plaintive album closer, “Free,” traces the singer’s journey beyond
grief and offers a hopeful note : “Whatever comes will be okay / You know
it will.”

LOW TIDE was funded entirely via a Kickstarter campaign that reached
its funding goal in just 34 hours and engaged 725 backers worldwide.
Tour planning is underway, with headline appearances scheduled at
Winterfolk (OR); Me & Thee Coffeehouse (MA); and Buffalo Friends of
Folk Music (NY). Grammer returns by popular demand to Act II Theatre
in Ambler, PA for a second installment of words+music, a musical
monologue based on her forthcoming memoir, and she will teach at Puget
Sound Guitar Workshop this summer. Following recent appearances with
Judy Collins and Paula Cole, she will showcase at the 30th Folk Alliance
International Conference in Kansas City in February. ###
